Isha Ambani, the daughter of Mukesh Ambani, and her spouse Anand Piramal are known for hosting one of the most extravagant weddings in India. However, the title of the world’s most opulent wedding did not belong to an Indian couple. Instead, it was the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana that held that distinction. While Isha Ambani and Anand Piramal’s wedding carried a staggering price tag of approximately Rs 400 crore, the opulent and royal wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles is estimated to have cost over USD 110 million, equivalent to more than Rs 914 crore.
The wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles was one of the most-watched events in the history of the British Royal Family, captivating an audience of over 28.4 million people. Particularly, Princess Diana’s wedding gown stands out as one of the most iconic bridal dresses of all time.
Despite Princess Diana’s wedding being the most expensive globally, the record for the priciest wedding attire goes to Mukesh Ambani’s daughter, Isha Ambani. She wore a golden and red lehenga valued at Rs 90 crore.
Princess Diana’s iconic wedding dress was designed by the former husband-and-wife duo, David and Elizabeth Emanuel. Crafted from silk and adorned with genuine pearls, the dress is estimated to have cost around Rs 4.1 crore. According to reports from The New York Times, Princess Diana and Prince Charles received over 3,000 gifts on their engagement and wedding day, including valuable diamond and gold jewelry, rare and costly timepieces, and exquisite tableware.
The royal wedding featured live music performed by 250 musicians and was attended by 1,400 guests. Despite the grandeur, Charles and Diana eventually divorced, and tragically, the princess lost her life in a car accident several years later.
